Hexagon Engineering started in 2007 as a provider of controls engineering services to the manufacturing industry. The company is built on more than 25 years of experience in the fields of safety engineering, controls and instrumentation in various industries including Water, Manufacturing, Utilities, Process and Aerospace industries. Today, Hexagon Engineering operates out of Oakville and Toronto, Ontario with offices in Edmonton, AB and Kassel, Germany and is an experienced and recognized provider of certified control system solutions and SIL 2 and 3 rated safety systems with our flagship Safety Control Unit (SCU) Fault Tolerant architecture for critical control applications. Controls, Software, Instrumentation and Automation

Product Development

Hexagon has a demonstrated history with technological innovation and Product Development. This experience includes new-to-the-world innovations in the areas of safety. A Safety Control Unit (SCU) in 2012 was introduced as a solution to adding safety functionality to a low-end PLC. A US patented wearable air quality monitor was also developed and prototyped using 3D printing. Hexagon Technology has been tasked to manage both products using it’s Product Management Playbook process which outlines the planned incremental improvements and next generations of the products.

Machine Learning and AI

Few technology fields are as important today as machine learning—and for good reason. Algorithms to spot patterns and anomalies in vast amounts of data can drive powerful real-time insights and decision-making for a wide range of applications. It only stands to reason that in the industrial space, where companies are managing billions of dollars’ worth of critical equipment, machine learning and industrial assets would be a match made in heaven. Industrial assets pose unique challenges for machine learning, and for artificial intelligence technologies in general. Machine intelligence can play a pivotal role in groundbreaking new industrial applications. But to capitalize on it, industrial companies—and the technology companies supporting them, both large and small—need to tread a different path than other types of enterprises. With experience using Statistical Process Control (SPC) API toolkit part of GE’s Proficy family of MES solutions, Hexagon Technology is entering the new era in ML and AI applications as industry is positioning itself to look for the rewards from their Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) investments.

Material Tracking on Cranes

Project Description: Material Tracking upgrade project at a global iron and steel manufacturer. The project involves the Electrical and Controls upgrade to enable material tracking automation in the future. The seven (7) cranes in the galvanizing and shipping areas are for material handling. The cranes are over 40 years old and the existing systems are in need of optimization and modernization. The scope of the project involves producing deliverables for Contractor tendering and work packages for the field work. The scope of work involves Controls, Electrical design.

New Refrigerant Bulk System

Project Description: In October 2017, Hexagon Technology partnered with another Consultant to do the design and engineering of a new system to deliver bulk refrigerant to two existing vehicle assembly plants in Ontario. The new system replaces the existing one for filling on-vehicle A/C units. The Project scope of work involves Valves, Piping and Structural (Tank foundation) design.

Food additive process upgrade

Project Description: In January 2017, we worked to design process improvements at a global food and beverage company. The Project involved the implementation of a new slurry line, improve instrumentation on an existing slurry line and add a new piping system for adding dye to their existing process. The Mississauga plant was to be the first implementation of this process. The project scope of work involved Instrumentation, Piping and Structural design.

Water Treatment Plant Control System Upgrade

Project Description: This project involved the retrofit of an obsolete Bailey DCS upgraded to the latest Rockwell PlantPAx system. The existing system is over 20 years old, spare parts are hard to find, and requires modernization to support the Client's Operational requirements. The scope on the project involved system design, producing deliverables for work packages for the fieldwork, converting the Bailey system to PlantPAx and programming/configuration for the whole system.

Iron Ore Mine Instrumentation & Control Systems – Processing Facility and Port

Project Description: Hexagon Technology provided engineering services for the $1.5B Kami mine project - Processing and Port facilities. The services included: System Engineering, Project Controls - Work Breakdown Structure, Specifications, CAD drawings, Test requirements and other technical Project deliverables. Network architectures, instrumentation & Controls design, structured cabling, CCTV, Fire Protection, business software applications and distributed control systems (DCS). Process Systems include Slurry, Water and Waste, Steam, Air, Electrical.

GE Locomotive Tier 4 exhaust After-treatment Project

Project Description: With a dedicated group from the Engineering department and partial funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), we led a $4MM design team for a locomotive after-treatment system with Canadian National Railways and developed the Project planning. The prototyping involving regular reviews of 3D model with end result of selecting appropriate technology for the system.

NASA - KSC VAB 375 Ton crane refurbishment Project

Project Description: Technical development of simulation, software, network application, SIL3 ESD system and write the technical documentation for the 325-ton crane refurbishment project for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center. Project value $5MM.

GM Powertrain - New and Major Projects

Project Description: We led teams focused on Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for the automotive industry with revenues of over $1B annually. Provided consulting services with Business Development and Engineering to guide clients’ (GM, Ford, Chrysler) corporate engineering in their IT architecture, software and controls choices for their manufacturing programs. The systems involved computerized systems networked to large MES databases. Also involved in many continuous improvement projects using 6Sigma.

GM Shanghai - Vehicle Assembly and Powertrain Plants

Project Description: End-to-end architecture and systems delivery for the GM Shanghai project, a $1.5B joint-venture EPC automotive manufacturing campus. Provided Program Management and technical expertise to a team consisting of 5 expat and 15 local engineers and local contractors and suppliers. Contract design and engineering for Communications, Controls, SCADA, Tracking, RFID systems including complete delivery and sign-off in accordance with local codes and practices. MES system involved redundant large databases interconnecting 100 computers accessing more than 10,000 data points.

Other Significant Projects

Provided site automation and fieldbus engineering services to City of Quebec Water and Wastewater Treatment plant, Alcoa Aluminium Smelter. Provided Automation and Instrumentation specifications and designs for the upgrade and refurbishment of Bruce A & B nuclear stations.
